Lt. Stephen Decatur

 


Lt. Stephen Decatur, one of the first officers of the recreated US Navy, served with distinction in Tripoli, leading flotilla in attacks on the pirate fleet in August, 1803, leading the covert mission aboard the USS Intrepid to skuttle the captured frigate USS Philadelphia, and lead the Americans in defeating the Barbary Pirate states of Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli.

He later died in a duel of honor.
