While chasing a pirate coarsair into Tripoli habor, the USS Philadelphia ran aground, and the 300 man crew were taken prisoner, including Captain Bainbridge, for whom the USS Bainbridge is named after. The USS Bainbridge was the US navy ship that captured or killed the pirates who commandeered a US commercial ship in 2009.

Other US war ships off Africa today include the USS Sterret, named after Lt. Sterret, commander of the schooner USS Enterprise, the first to engage and soundly defeat a pirate ship, the Tripoli.

The US nuclear carrier Enterprise, now in the theater of the Middle East, is named after Sterret's schooner, which was also commanded by Lt. Stephen Decatur.
