William Eaton, American counsel to Egypt, led a small army across the desert to capture the seaport town of Dernha, east of Bengazi. As Eaton and USMC Sgt. Presley O'Bannon prepared to march to Tripoli to remove the Bey Youseff Karananli and free the 300 American prisoners from the captured frigate USS Philadelphia, the Bey of Tripoli made a deal with the Americans to release the prisoners for $60,000 ransome and not seek any tribute.
