Construction of the USS Philadelphia at South Philly
When news of American ships being taken by Barbary Pirates and their crews and passengers being sold to slavery, Americans were determined not to pay the tributes or the ransom the pirates demanded, but instead they built a navy that went to war for the first time.
Among the frigates they built at Joshua Humphries' boat yard in South Philadelphia was
the USS Philadelphia.
