Named after US Navy Lt. Sterett, the commander of the schooner USS Enterprise, sent to fight Barbary Pirates, the Enterprise under Sterett was the first US war ship to encounter pirates, and soundly defeated the Tripoli in that first engagement.
The pirate captain of the Tripoli surrendered three times, feigned defeat twice before finally sincerely surrendering. Another pirate captain faked surrender during the first Battle of Tripoli harbor in August, 1804, and while his guard was down, killed Lt. Decatur, younger brother of Stephen Decatur, who left his own battle to revenge his brother's death by killing the pirate captain.
