Angelina Jolie Delivers Aide to Misrata


Actress Angelina Jolie visits rebel fighter in hospital in Misrata while delivering humanitarian aide to Libyans.

Actor Sean Penn visited Tripoli last week, saying he was inspired by the bravery of the Libyan revolutionaries.Film actress and United Nations goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie on Tuesday started a two-day visit to Libya. In a statement, she said her made her visit in order to see a country in transition and to help agencies bringing aid to Libyans in Tripoli and Misurata.

Jolie said: "I have come to Libya for a variety of reasons, to see a country in transition at every level and to witness efforts to fully realise the promise of the Arab Spring."

The actress, who was visiting the country for the first time, went on to say: "The country faces a host of challenges, including internally displaced people, refugees, rule of law, security, sanitation, education, health and other humanitarian needs.

"All of these pieces must be delivered and coordinated properly in an environment of reconciliation and justice."

Jolie had previously visited Libyan refugees in Malta and on the Italian island of Lampedusa in June. She also went to Tunisia in April to appeal for international support for people fleeing the revolution there.

Anfelina Jolie is an ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR and is expected to announce an expanded role soon.

In Libya she met representatives from UNHCR, the Medecins Sans Frontieres and local non-governmental organisations delivering assistance to Libyans in Misurata and Tripoli.

Jolie told Reuters she also intended to meet with officials from all sides but above all, to listen to the local people in the street. “I am here to express solidarity with them. It is the work of rebuilding and recovery that will determine Libya's future," she said.
